Infiniti is recalling more than 500 model year 2017 QX30 SUVs due to defective airbags made by Autoliv, a company that has been having problems lately, not nearly as much as Takata, but still enough problems to cause concern.
Infiniti is warning owners to not allow passengers to ride in the front passenger seats until the cars are repaired. Replacement parts won't be available until February 2017, so Infiniti has authorized "alternate transportation" for owners who request it until parts become available.
Infiniti told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the Autoliv front passenger airbag modules have problems caused during the manufacturing process at the supplier.
The automaker says a software error occurred in the controls that inject the chemical mixture for the airbags, causing an incorrect chemical composition that is out of specification. The airbag "initiators" may not work properly and cause the frontal passenger airbags to fail in a crash.
The recalled 2017 Infiniti QX30 SUVs were built from August 11, 2016, to September 27, 2016.
Autoliv told Infiniti that replacement parts aren't available, but dealers will eventually need to replace the passenger airbag assemblies.
